I guess I should state that I think the specific questions I asked are irrelevant, the point is someone established like Barr or someone in question approaching you or I for a collaboration should know something beyond what gets covered in TIME magazine about comics.
I don't think it's everything, or even grounds for "certification," but getting to know the form's history, or more to the point, it's ground breaking work, notable creators and canonical works is an integral part of being a capable artist or writer in comics, and at the least shows respect for what you do, have done, and the rest of us are still trying to do.
Many thanks for stopping by, (and giving cause for a shout out to Donna Barr.)
-SJSJhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17181694732531476160noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7832301837056586091.post-51927952498702868672011-10-11T15:37:49.915-07:002011-10-11T15:37:49.915-07:00On the other hand, Donna Barr would answer "n...On the other hand, Donna Barr would answer "no" to maybe half those questions, and no one would suggest she's not qualified to do graphic novels. I guess that's what's bitter-sweet about Jobs as whole to me in death, at least we can put a face to some of the innovators responsible for the way our lives have improved. In generations past, developers and invenmtors remained largely anonymous, certainly not celebrities. Who can remember the name of the guy who created anti-lock brakes for example? I can't. Seriously, I've never encountered the surname 'Killebrew' anywhere. I was too embarrassed to ask you guys exactly who he was and who he'd played for, so when I asked my friend at school (Jeff Schneider,) his father made a federal case out of it because neither of us knew. It would've been easier on me if I'd just asked you and Mejias in the first place.
In the years since, I always marveled at how little bragging (none really) this guy did, compared to players still in the game with like nothing nearly as great a record to compare with.
The guy was just a giant. Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax, Yogi, Whitey, Stan Musial are still with us, but who knows for how much longer. We need to cherish them while we still have them around. I never saw Mr. Killebrew play, but the stories of his amazing power displays were a big part of my baseball education.
